In Christchurch, one of New Zealand's largest cities, the streets hum with activity.

From early morning brunches by the Avon to all night partying on the strip, the city has embraced the café scene. Street theatre, the International Busker's Festival, the Town Crier and the internationally recognised Wizard all add to the colourful and vibrant atmosphere.

Christchurch's colonial heritage provides a living historical backdrop for the city's attractions. The Arts Centre, The Robert McDougall Art Gallery and the Canterbury Museum combine the grandeur of Christchurch's past with the dynamism of it's present, playing host to a multitude of unique exhibitions, festivals and displays.

For those that appreciate sophistication, Christchurch offers a range of attractions.

Fine dining, an evening at the theatre or a night at the casino, a punt down the Avon, a gondola ride to a hilltop restaurant or a Champagne balloon safari.

Christchurch has something for even the most jaded palette.

And Christchurch is the city that loves to party. In every season and for nearly every occasion the city has a celebration.

Even in the depths of winter, Christchurch plays on and, with ten convenient ski areas, fantastic winter sports and a climate that allows you to take advantage of both, with good reason.

The Hurunui District offers an alpine wonderland for the outdoor enthusiast: from bungy jumping and jet boating to forest walks and mountain biking. Few experiences can rival a soak in Hanmer Spring's natural thermal pools surrounded by snow capped peaks.

En-route to Hanmer from Christchurch, the Waipara District is home to twenty wineries, creating stunning examples of the wines that have gained New Zealand an international reputation.

The Waimakariri District has many visitor attractions and is ideal for half day tours from Christchurch. There is excellent shopping at Rangiora, the main urban centre in the district, safe beaches and braided rivers, fishing walks, scenic countryside, crafts and charming local museums.

Nestled in Canterbury's ancient volcano, Akaroa village offers an opportunity to step back into New Zealand's captivating history.
