Did you know ...

The kiss

The kiss became part of the marriage ceremony as far back as early Roman times when it signified a legal bond that sealed a contract.

Giving away

The tradition of the father giving away his daughter has survived from the times when a bride was actually sold to the groom and her father handed her over to her husband in return for compensation.
In a traditional Jewish wedding the bride is not "given away", rather both sets of parents bring their children to the wedding canopy to be consecrated to each other.

Marriage by capture

The tradition of the bride standing on the groom's left goes back to the old 'marriage by capture' idea where the groom needed his sword hand free for defence.
