This is how it is done traditionally - feel free to make all the changes you need to suit your family and friends.

Before the day

  • Confirms the ceremony arrangements
  • Pays the celebrant on behalf of the groom
  • Hires clothes for himself, the groom and ushers
  • Writes his speech
  • Arranges the stag night
  • Attends the wedding rehearsal
 

On the day - before the ceremony

  • Collects the orders of service and buttonholes from the bride's mother
  • Makes sure he has the wedding ring(s)
  • Ensures the groom gets to the ceremony on time
 

On the day - the ceremony

  • Organises the ushers
  • Signs the register
  • Informs the guests of transport arrangements to the reception
 

On the day - at the reception

  • If there is no toastmaster, introduces the speeches at the reception
  • Reads out the messages
  • Delivers his speech
  • Invites the bridal couple to cut the cake
  • Supervises the decoration of the groom's car
  • Ensures a smooth getaway for the couple
  • Returns the groom's suit if hired
