From proposal to honeymoon, Shelley & Phillip's wedding had a seaside theme.

Phillip spent a lot of time dreaming up the perfect proposal. He started at 6am, coming to Shelley's flat with a gift of lingerie and cooking her breakfast. That night, as they sat on the beach enjoying a bottle of wine, he presented her with a rimu jewellery box that he had made. Inside was a card saying "I love you, will you marry me? Love Phil". Shelley said "yes" of course! Later, at the restaurant, flowers were waiting for Shelley.

Shelley and Phillip decided to have their wedding just four months later. "I don't recommend it" says Shelley "it was one big rush".

Despite the lack of time, they managed to do a lot of the work themselves. "The biggest job was the invitations" says Shelley "each one was handmade from sea-blue paper and sealed with a gold shell".

Shelley's sister spent her school holidays making shells from plaster of paris, sprayed gold. They needed dozens of them - some for the invitations and many more for the table decorations that Shelley created from driftwood, foxtails, gold candles and more gold shells.

More golden shells and sea creatures (this time made from icing!) decorated their cake.

Shelley and Phillip chose a friend to marry them. Because he isn't a registered celebrant, they had a celebrant in the background to provide the legalities. They chose their own wedding service, starting with several songs. "I was really pleased that we'd done this" says Shelley "as I walked down the aisle my knees were knocking and starting with singing really helped to calm the nerves."

Shelley chose a white Vinka Lucas gown, her bridesmaids were in blue chiffon with gold scarves, and the flower girls in white with gold sashes.

"Despite the rush to get ready, the day went perfectly" says Shelley.

Even their families' newly-wed treatment of their flat was 'perfect'. "They did a very thorough job" says Shelley "our sheets were sewn down the middle, there was glitter everywhere including in the spice jars, someone had swapped the mayonnaise and hair conditioner, and the flat was filled with balloons and streamers. Truly memorable."
