Tips for planning your perfect wedding day - page 2

Marie of Wanganui: We have learnt, while planning our wedding - that it is extremely important not to leave everything till the last minute.  We have been organising each stage of our wedding together over the past few months.   Everything seems to be falling into place well - no stresses so far!  I think that is because we are not trying to do it all at once, we are giving ourselves a few jobs each month and just concentrating on them.  One step at a time is working best for us.

Phillipa of Auckland: If looking to marry overseas check if you require a "certificate of no impediment". This certificate is obtainable from the Ministry of Internal Affairs for $120.

Many countries require proof that you are eligible to marry before a ceremony can take place.

Lisa of Auckland: Our wedding is planned for Feb 2007 and we are buying as much alcohol as we can with our Fly Buys points and through friends duty free allowances.  That way we won't be faced with a huge alcohol bill near our wedding day.

Cassandra of Hawkes Bay: Make the day special for the 2 of you and don't let all the crazy planning make it a headache rather than the beginning of something special and a day to remember.

Rebecca of Wellington: I am making the chocolates for our bombonerie at about a quarter of the price it would be to purchase them.  Doesn't take too long and is a fun thing to do with your bridesmaids.

Romina of Palmerston North: I send myself an email including a list of what i have achieved that day and a list of 'things to do' for the next day.  i have found that reading this email each morning keeps me motivated to stay onto of the planning.

Kirsty of Hamilton: I have been using the website ‘Trademe’ which has been so helpful with cutting costs, I have found vases/table favours and wedding bubbles all at half the price of retail!

Charlotte of Christchurch: It is very exciting when you first get engaged and you want to pick the pretty dress and tell all your friends and that is fine. A warning... make sure that you put a lot of time and thought into who you think will be the best person to fill the position of being the maid of honour and bridesmaid.  Don't pick someone just because they are related and don't pick them just because you promised them you would 10 years ago... choose very carefully as those people will be in the pictures and those people will either 'make or break the day. Pick someone who is open to anything.

Amanda of Christchurch: I am a 'list' girl so I have many lists all around the house and office and also several diaries. It actually gives great satisfaction to able to cross things off the list; and if you have several lists you get to cross that one thing off several times making you feel like you have achieved even more.

Stephen of Wellington: We are planning on having personalised invitations made by a photographic and digital laboratory.  We will be using creative photo's and having them overwritten with our invitation message.

Sheree of Taranaki: Stay calm and don’t stress.

Vicky of Palmerston North: It is so important to set your budget and stick to it!! It also doesn't hurt to start planning as early as possible.  I'm getting married next month and everything has been planned and majority paid for for about 2-3 months.

Karena of Masterton: I'm getting married next Jan and I plan to have a "WEDDING DAY EMERGENCY  KIT" with anything in it that you might need for the big day - everything from Panadol for the hangover, to wet wipes for the accidental marks on the dresses. and superglue for any shoe repair.

Imee of Auckland: When planning and on your honeymoon, always make sure your 'advertise' the fact that you are newlyweds. I know people that have had free flight upgrades to Business Class, free room upgrades at hotels and even one couple that got a complimentary limousine during their stay in New York .

Amanda of Tauranga: If you stop to please everyone you will never make it to the big day - do what you feel you would like and how you want to do it.

Yvette of Hamilton: If you really want that perfect wedding dress, it's never too early to start.   Even before you are planning a wedding, do buy the occasional wedding magazine and if you see something that appeals (a hem, a neckline, etc), keep the picture. Whatsmore, you'll have a great resource for friends even if it's not your turn yet.

Lee of Bulls: Tip buy some disposable cameras for guests so you get lots of photos ,of all sorts of things at the wedding.

And even though not quite on topic we thought you might enjoy Karen of Palmerston North’s engagement story: "I'm not sure I have any tips yet... but I think the story of our proposal is very special.  T'was the night of my 30th birthday and we were planning to go to a very nice restaurant in town.  However it was my partner's idea to have a glass of bubbly first at home beforehand.  So while I'm rushing around getting ready, the lounge is nicely dimmed, a couple of candles lit and Jewel playing on the stereo.  It took me a few sips of my bubbles to realise that there was a diamond ring in the bottom of my flute!  It also seemed like forever to retrieve it!  He's very romantic and made my daunting 30th birthday a very special and memorable event.
